Definitions for commercial rapid prototyping, production, machining, casting, moulding, finishing and inspection terms.

Kapton masking

Use of polyimide tape to mask surfaces during painting, plating, anodising or composite processing.

Kerf

The width of material removed by a cutting process such as laser cutting, sawing or waterjet cutting.

Kevlar

A para-aramid fibre used as a reinforcement in some composite filaments and advanced lightweight structures.

Keyslot

A slot machined to accept a key for torque transmission between mating components such as shafts and hubs.

Keyway

A slot used to transmit torque between a shaft and a keyed component.

Knit line

A visible line or weakened interface formed where two melt fronts meet but do not fuse perfectly. Knit line is often used interchangeably with weld line, although some processors distinguish them by angle or strength.

Knockout pin

Another term for ejector pin in some tooling contexts.

Knurling

A patterned surface rolled or cut on a part to improve grip or retention.
